Featured Photographer: Juan Carlos Gonzalez

Growing up as a tour guide in the Amazon of Venezuela first sparked my interest in photography. I would watch professional photographers on jungle tours staging pictures of my everyday surroundings of caves, plants, and wildlife. I enjoyed learning and watching the passion they had towards photography and was hopeful that art would someday become a part of my life.
I met a beautiful American on one of my tours, married young and moved to Texas. Two kids and three cats later, my life has gone from wild and adventurous to a parent who has to count to ten before dealing with another crayon inside the toaster or a diaper that leaks. My photography then began as a proud parent trying to capture that perfect image of their child.
I started to see how light and composition can make ordinary images extraordinary. However, staying home with two kids meant I could not travel to find that perfect shot, but had to create them from my everyday surroundings, as I saw the professionals do so long ago in the Amazon. So, photography has now become my late night friend. I began working with fruits and vegetables from our fridge using white backgrounds. I added kitchen utensils and practiced arranging my light.
My combinations of elements are a creation of seemingly mundane objects, put into unusual perspectives to create photographs that are not the norm.
